PVTT UPRIGHT HANDS ON HIPSFriday to Sunday. One of the hallmarks of Iyengar Yoga is the systematic, methodical way it is taught. This is in keeping with the progressive teachings of classical yoga. Patanjali speaks about the stages of Samyama, the three stages of transforming the mind, the four stages of life, and more. Of this, Guruji says,  “But one who has not mastered the lower stages cannot attain the higher, nor can he skip the intermediate stages. If each stage is followed in turn, one becomes acquainted with them by degrees and full insight develops.”

PVTT CONCAVE HANDS ON FLOORThis is true for all the eight limbs of ashtanga yoga as well, including asana and pranayama. Even a casual examination of the syllabi in the IYNAUS Certification Manual or the practice sequences at the back of Light On Yoga reveals that B.K.S. Iyengar developed a sequential, step-by-step approach to practice and teaching.

During the weekend, we’ll explore ways that asanas and pranayamas can be practiced and taught in stages, so that students can learn and deepen their practice in a way that builds them up.
