Teaching Backbends:
A Weekend for Teachers and Serious Students
With John Schumacher
In 1991, John attended a three-week backbend intensive for senior teachers with B.K.S. Iyengar in which Mr. Iyengar laid out the standard for teaching backbends. In this extended workshop from Thursday morning to Sunday mid-day, John will show you the fundamental actions of all backbends and teach sequences for introducing beginning backbends. From there, we will gradually build up to the practice and teaching of Urdhva Dhanurasana and Dwi Pada Viparita Dandasana. The schedule will consist of a three hour morning class and two hour afternoon class. This is a wonderful opportunity to focus deeply in a quiet and supportive environment, learning the art of practicing and teaching backbends.
Weekend fee is $365, and includes tuition and Sunday brunch. For more details contact Linda San Gabriel at Linda@unitywoods.com or call (301) 656-8992 ext. 118.

Adominable Abdominals
With Mary Pappas-Sandonas
Come build a flexible and strong core and discover your center. These muscles include those that surround the abdomen, lower back, and hips. Every movement you make starts from your core. Like a pebble tossed into a lake, the effects of the core muscles are felt throughout your entire body. Lengthening, strengthening and creating endurance in the core stabilizes the lower and upper body and their extremities, making them less prone to injury. Flatter abs, a healthier lower back, increased balance and improved posture are its rewards... AB-solutely. NOT suitable for pregnancy or lower back injuries.
SHORT COURSE (not a workshop)
Time: 10:30 - 11:45 a.m.

Stress and the Yoga Sutras
Stress has been implicated in a wide variety of diseases and medical conditions including cardiovascular disease, asthma, autoimmune disorders, diabetes and obesity. Yoga is widely accepted as a method to relieve stress. Why? Can yoga actually prevent diseases of slow accumulation?

We’ll discuss how the state of the science relates to the yoga sutras, and then integrate what we’ve learned into a two hour Asana class.
