"Is Yoga All the Exercise You Need?" See article which includes UW teacher Alyson Ross

"Core Values" by John Schumacher
Yoga Journal, Feb. 2010

Studio News Spring 2010

On January 18, Janet Brooks died at the age of 91. JB, as she was lovingly known, was a fixture at Unity Woods for over 25 years. She attended class with many of our teachers during that time but was a devoted student of Liz’s for many years. JB was a yoga teacher herself and taught right up until the end. She was featured last year in the Northwest Current in September, 2008. We will miss JB’s straightforward talk, her no-nonsense opinions, her sparkling sense of humor, and her mischievous smile. Bon voyage, JB. (A memorial service will be held on July 24 at 3:30pm at the Washington Ethical Society, 7750 16th Street, NW, Washington, DC.)

John was featured in the Dec. 15 "fit" section of the Washington Post Express in an article about Unity Woods’ 30th anniversary.

Rocky's annual New Year's Eve morning workshop raised $1010 for Hope Springs Institute which is sponsoring a Peace Conference in June. For more details, see www.HopeSpringsInstitute.org.

Alyson published a scholarly article in the January issue of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, "The health benefits of yoga and exercise: a review of comparison studies."

Rocky brought yoga and prayer to Temple Micah in January to help members of that community honor their relationship to trees and the natural environment.

The February issue of Yoga Journal contained an article by John in their "home practice" column. Titled "core values", the article presented "a playful approach to building strength and flexibility in your torso."

The Unity Woods Community of students, teachers, and staff contributed $2,373 to Doctors Without Borders for their relief work in Haiti. We will continue to raise more funds for Haiti via our "Yogathon for Haiti" on Sunday, May 2.
